Governor General


His Excellency, Justice the Hon. Elliot Fitzroy Belgrave, CHB, Q.C, was born on March 16, 1931.

He received his primary education at the Boscobelle Boys’ School, St. Peter, from 1936 until 1944, and his secondary education at the Coleridge and Parry School from1944 to 1949.

Justice Belgrave pursued studies in law at the University of London, graduating with an LLB. degree in 1963. Following this, he was admitted to the English Bar before returning to Barbados in 1966 when he was called to the local Bar.

Between 1970 and 1972 he lectured in law at Holborn College of Law and Languages in London, and later gained the Master of Philosophy degree in Criminology and Sociology from Cambridge University.

Justice Belgrave has enjoyed a long and distinguished legal career in Barbados. He acted as Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court in 1967, and was later appointed as a magistrate in 1968, a Senior Crown Counsel in 1970 and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in 1976.He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1987, and acted as Chief Justice periodically between 1987 and1995. He served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal between 2002 and 2003 before retiring from the bench.

His Excellency has acted as this country’s Head of State on a number of occasions since 2008.

In appreciation of his long and distinguished service to the legal profession and the judiciary, Justice Belgrave was awarded the Companion of Honour of Barbados (CHB) in 1993.

He was sworn in on November 2, 2011, to act as Governor General, following the retirement of Sir Clifford Husbands.
